I grew up on Disney. We had all the movies. We had the toys. And we had the bi-annual Disney vacations. One of those vacations, while riding the monorail to Magic Kingdom, we saw a bride getting married at the Wedding Pavillion. My mom mused about how much fun that would be. And well, it turns out she was right (even though there was a HUGE side dish of drama that I really could have done without). It was also during one of those bi-annual vacations turned annual vacations that my parents got the idea to buy into the Disney Vacation Club. That trip was also the first family vacation The Husband ever joined us on.
So it stands to reason that Three would also get brought up on Disney. He has been 4 times now (thanks in no small part to that DVC membership his grandparents bought 13 years ago). And 3 of those visits have occurred in the last 14 months thanks to some poor/awesome planning depending on your point of view. He has memories of the place is my point. And we have our traditions. Things we do every trip, pictures that get taken every trip. Stuff like that. And thanks to all those recent Disney trips & our recent vacation to Puerto Rico, travel to Three is about as normal as going to visit relatives in NJ. The child may not have an abundance of toys, but man does he know his way around an airport.
I really dislike taking my kid to get a haircut. I really need to buy myself one of those trimmer things so I could just do it myself, but I keep avoiding it. Pretty much every time he gets a haircut, its generally WAY past due. Which was the case last week when I decided that even though the haircut place was bound to be a madhouse because of the back to school rush, it was time.
So as we were eating lunch, I told Three that he was going to get a haircut today.
“I am going to DISNEY WORLD?!?”
“Well, no, not today. You don’t get ALL your haircuts in Disney” (although as I was saying this I realized that 2 of his last three haircuts were at Disney so perhaps it was a reasonable assumption for a three year old).
“I need to pack my SUITCASE! And go in a PLANE and FLY! And then get on a MICKEY BUS and go to the HOTEL”
“Well, not today. We are going to go to a haircut place here. We aren’t going back to Disney for a while so you need to get your hair cut a little closer to home”
“Oh. No Mickey Bus? I like the Mickey buses, mommy”
He took the disappointment well, and was actually the best behaved for a haircut that he has been at home. After he was done, he got a lolipop and a mini slinky to take home.
As we were leaving he said to me “Mommy, that place was okay, but next time, can we at least think about going to Disney World for my haircut? I like Disney World better”.
I believe this is called ‘reaping what you sowed’.
Luckily, the annual trip with my parents for 2012 has been tentatively scheduled. But Three has been told there will be no discussion of the next trip to Disney until after Christmas.
And surely by the time we board that plane, he will once again be long over due for a haircut.
