Snowtober

Last Friday, I was stitting around at work, minding my own business, when one of my co-workers started talking crazy about 3-5 inches of snow.

A few hours later, weather.com started putting out crazy shit like predicting we were going to get 10-15 inches of snow. And that is when the PTSD of last winter kicked in, and I just went into flat out denial mode.

It was OCTOBER 28th. There was no way we were going to get over a foot of snow. That was just stupid.

By later that evening I had accepted we would be getting SOME snow. I even had accepted the idea that we would probably lose power over night Saturday into Sunday, but by Sunday everything would be back to normal because it really wasn’t going to be THAT bad.

By mid Saturday morning, it was starting to look like snow. I sighed, and went about starting my home improvement project for the weekend (a new closet organizer for one of the linen closets upstairs. I lead an uber exciting life). Because nothing is ever as simple as one thinks it will be this project of course required an unplanned Home Depot run. We put off the Home Depot run until after our new living room furniture got delivered (YAY! COUCHES!). By the time the furniture showed up, it was snowing. But nothing was sticking. So we headed out to Home Depot – deciding to go to the one that is 20 minutes away rather than right down the street hoping Three would take a MUCH needed nap in the car while we were errand running, and also because that one would put us right by Starbucks, and well we are addicts. We also decided we would pick something up at the grocery store on the way back since we probably weren’t going anywhere for dinner that night.

By the time we left Home Depot, we were driving in far from ideal conditions. We did stop at Starbucks, but opted to skip the grocery store and just make do with whatever odds and ends we had left in the pantry from the week. We got home and the Husband did his man thing and finished ripping out the clothes rod that was in the linen closet while I lived a totally decadent hour watching Top Chef on the new HD TV whilst sitting on my COUCH. It was heaven.

While I was enjoying the high life for an hour, our pumpkins were sitting outside saying WTF?

And then I went to work prepping the closet to be painted. I got all the nail holes spackled, and was just starting to do the sanding, when the power cut out.

It was 5 PM on Saturday. (My closet BTW, still not organized.)

By Sunday morning, 6-8″ later, the snow had stopped but the power was still not back on. So we went and played in the snow some and shoveled the drive way.

And cleaned off my car. I swear I WAS JUST DOING THIS. What happened to summer?

By lunch time Sunday we had limited cell service and still no power so we headed out in search of lunch. After spending the afternoon with my parents and their fireplace (they also had no power) we went to dinner, and then spent the night camped out at the husband’s office because at least he had power and heat. And did I mentioned I hadn’t showered at this point since late Thursday night? But at least by 8 PM or so cell service was back so I could at least get my angst out on the interwebs.

Monday, Three’s school had power & room, so we paid for the extra day and sent him in for the full day instead of just for his Halloween party. Which was a god send. The child needed some normal in his life, even if Monday is not normally a school day for him. By Noon Monday we finally had an estimate for when we would get power back – Wednesday night at 11 PM. Which was disappointing, but also nice to finally have a time line. Aunt Kiki & Gunkle let us shower at their place and then fed us dinner. And then it was back to camping at the office. (After a pathetic drive by the house to feed the cat and confirm that yes, indeed the power was still out). And me being bitter that I finally had a high def TV AND COUCHES and I was missing watching Hawaii Five-0 because of the stupid power outage. (First World Problems. I have them.)

Still no power Tuesday morning and by this point, you could see your breath when you were in the house. TOO DAMN COLD. By this point, my father started joking that we had spent more time hanging out in The Husband’s office than we had spent in the house. He THINKS he is SO funny. *sigh*.

Tuesday, after working all day, the husband went back to the house to check. AGAIN. And still no power. He packed up some clean clothes and we headed to another friend’s of ours for dinner and showers. We ended up staying a little later than we should have. After dinner, before heading to the office AGAIN, we did one more hail mary drive-by the house around 8:30 PM.

On the main-ish road that leads to our neighborhood there was a definite increase in the number of houses with power. We started to get excited. When we noticed that the there were lights on in the houses at the entrance to our neighborhood I started squeeling.

When we drove up our street and were greeted with this:

we all started jumping up and down doing the we have power dance.

The house was still wicked cold when we got there, so I imagine that the power had JUST gotten turned on not long before we got there. Timing. It is everything.

We put Three to bed and the Husband went back to the office to dismantle our ‘camp site’. And I discovered that FiOS has Hawaii Five-0 on demand.

First world technology FTMFW!

damn. I am still stuck on starbucks being 20min away. That can’t be true!
I really didnt think there was going to be much snow at all. Of course we got a bit less than you but still. It was so shocking.

Starbucks is generally 10-15 mins away depending on how you hit the lights, but on Saturdays, there is a stupid amount of traffic.

Suburbia can be so dumb sometimes.
