A Pirate’s Life for Him

Anyone who knows me, knows that I tend to avoid Halloween like the plague. I think in the 6 years we were at the condo, we handed out candy once. And that was because our friend was living with us at the time and he wanted to hand out candy.

But now I have a preschooler. And we live in a neighborhood. With neighbors who deliver brownies and fruit baskets to welcome us to the neighborhood.

So with a healthy does of guilt, I was fully prepared that I was going to have to partake in the holiday and hand out candy this year like any other suburban mom.

And then it snowed. And we lost power. And the easy built in way of meeting the rest of the neighbors was lost.

But thankfully, Three was not all dressed up with no place to go. First he went to school on Monday for the Halloween party (and stayed for the heat & power). Then we headed to Aunt Kiki & Gunkle’s for dinner. They get a fair amount of trick or treaters (and even more this year than usual since their neighborhood was one of the few with power) and Three LOVED seeing all the other kids come to the door. But he had absolutely zero interest in going door to door himself. Which frankly suited me just fine. He wore his costume and smiled shyly from behind whoever had opened the door at the kids who were making the candy in Aunt Kiki’s bowl disappear. But no candy for him.

But Halloween wasn’t quite over for him yet.

Because he ended up at school all day on Monday, he didn’t get a chance to stop by his favorite Starbucks and see his favorite Barista (you know that you frequent Starbucks just a little too often when the staff actually requests to see your kid in his Halloween costume). Sooooo, today was Halloween part two.

The best part was we got to use the impending Starbucks trip as bribery for picture taking before hand. My child is OVER having his photo taken. Ever. *sigh*.

Once we had exhausted the limited patience for pictures we headed out to Starbucks. And despite the fact that he will talk ABOUT his favorite Barista (besides Aunt Kiki) at length, he still refuses to talk TO her. But despite his sudden shyness the staff at Starbucks still gave him the Halloween candy that had saved for him from the stash they gave out earlier in the week.

The Husband is voting that Three dress as a Barista next Halloween. But Three is not convinced. He is afraid he would have to ‘stand up’ when he went to Starbucks (when we are there and Aunt Kiki is working instead of sitting with us, Three calls it standing up) and he ‘doesn’t know how to make the drinks’.
