The Eagle Has Landed

Our new house is anything but new. It was built in 1967 so it has seen its fair share of life already. And thanks to google, I know that the original owners – the people we bought it from – had one daughter. I also know they had a dog. But that is a story for another day.

Its weird living in what was someone else’s house. Especially since it is taking a while for this place to start to feel like our home. The power going out for 4 days only a couple weeks after we moved in certainly didn’t help with that either. And neither has the husband’s work and travel schedule. I have managed to get us (mostly) unpacked at this point, but there is still so much work to be done. But I digress.

The sellers didn’t leave much behind (well once they took all the crap out of the basement) when they left. Other than the manuals for the appliances, and some dish soap at the sink, we haven’t found much in any of the cabinets or anything. But they did leave behind evidence of their decorating tastes.

First, there is the guy from earlier in this post. He greets you (rather angrily if you ask me, I’m sort of afraid he is going to come to life and eat my face off) at the front door when you come to visit. We haven’t gotten a ladder out yet to see if he can reasonably come down without damaging the brick (we have already removed the welcome sign that was to the side of the door that had the former owners last name one it) but that is on my list. It is apparently very low down on The Husband’s list though. He is campaigning to keep that guy.

Once inside, assuming you aren’t scared off by the guy outside we’d take your coat, help you feel at home. Well, hiding behind the front door used to be this guy.

He came down as soon as I realized getting the wallpaper down in the dining room and the entry way was going to be way easier than I originally thought. I was so excited about that I never took a close up photo of him in his proper place, other than with my phone. But now that he has been recorded, this guy is headed for Goodwill. I am sure SOMEONE might want him.

After hanging up your coat, you may want to take a quick trip to the bathroom right? Especially if you have driven a long way. Once in our half bath downstairs, these guys will be happy to keep guard over your knees whilst you wash your hands.

Nice of them to do that isn’t it?

And now its time for you to get settled and enjoy your visit. Handily, we have couches in our living room now, so I’ll invite you to come and sit down and make yourself as comfy as possible. Because you might find yourself getting creeped out by this guy who will be right above your head.

I named him Phil. Mostly because I was watching Modern Family when I decided to name him. I think the full on metalic gold paint job really makes him don’t you? At least he’s ‘regal’ and not angry, I guess? The Husband is also strangely attached to Phil and thinks he is staying. Even held up the paint chip next to him to convince me Phil would compliment it.

The living room is FINALLY getting painted Monday & Tuesday this week. Phil will join his buddy at Goodwill. Unless anyone (other than my husband) wants to claim him.

That first eagle, the one over your door…the same exact one is over our fireplace in the house we are renting, so I can’t remove it. Which wouldn’t have been all that bad by itself, but then someone decided to put one layer of “decorative” tiles all around the sides and top of the fireplace…duck tiles. Yes, we go from an eagle to ducks right below it. It is horrible!
