I’d been thinking about doing this, and then Linda at All & Sundry posted this list, and it was easier to answer the questions than to think of ones to answer myself. A new tradition? If I can remember I did this next year ;)
1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?
We went to Puerto Rico, which was fabulous.
And there was the whole buying an honest to goodness house.
And becoming landlords. Which still seems skeevy and dirty to me. But having the mortgage paid is really nice.
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year??
I think last years big new year’s resolution was to get back in shape. Which I was doing really well on. Until we found ourselves knee deep in moving. And then I fell off the wagon and never got back on it.
Oh, and the Husband and I had grand goals of more date days / nights. Which never really happened. We really need to expand our non existant circle of babysitters. That would help.
This year’s resolution is probably more of the same, so Sunday will probably mean that I will be back at the gym, hopefully sweating up a storm and not starting off the new year with a date ;)
Other than that, I don’t think I will make any real resolutions. But I will be forcing the husband to sit down and make a list of stuff we want to do this year – like go to Boston to visit my brother, and hopefully a weekend trip to Washington, DC. I have my fingers crossed for a summer trip to Seattle to meet the newest member of the extended family. And if I am REALLY lucky/persuasive a trip to London. I have a thing for travel.
The husband wants to have a plan for the backyard landscaping. And have more of a work/life balance. And get back into running himself.
And we really need to figure out an answer to the ‘are we having another kid’ question.
The husband has persuaded me that I should do a 365 photo project. So I will probably start that. I’m betting by 1/15, its over, but we’ll try. The impending arrival of my iPhone (woot! Christmas FTW) should help with that, but we’ll see.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth??
One of my BFFs from college became a father this year. And while we had a falling out a few years ago, we have become friends again, and it is killing me that I haven’t met the baby yet. Maybe I should add that to the list of things I want to do in 2012 – a trip to Vegas.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
I don’t think so. I imagine someone that I am supposed to deem close to me did die this year, but as strained as family relations are, I can’t think of anyone. And all my friends are thankfully alive and kicking. A girl I went to high school with died on Thanksgiving from ovarian cancer. While I wasn’t friends with her, seeing the news on Facebook from friends was a not so subtle reminder about not taking life for granted.
5. What countries did you visit?
Well Puerto Rico is like a foreign country, even if its a territory. Someday I am hoping to have the need for the Three to have a passport. Sooner vs. Later.
6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
I don’t know. We have spent so much time wanting the house, that now that we have it, we haven’t had time to focus on wanting or needing anything else. But give me time. I’ll think of something.
7. What dates from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I can’t really think of any big dates. I guess 10/6, which was the day we closed on the house. Or 10/9, the day we moved in. But really, years from now, I am sure I won’t remember them. I’ll be all, we moved in in October sometime. And then eventually it’ll be ‘We moved in the fall of……2011? Maybe?’
I would say our anniversary sticks out this year. Not only did we head back to Disney for it, we were actually together on our anniversary, something that is rare around these parts.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year??
Hrm…..I shot my very first wedding which was a pretty big deal. Now I just need a second one.
But FINALLY buying the house was probably the big thing.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I’ve had some not to stellar moments with Three. There are too many days when I could use an extra dose of patience in my Starbucks drink.
Also, someday I should really get off my duff and REALLY do something with my photography. I need to get over myself mostly.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing major. Just the normal run of the mill occasional daycare diseases. But really, given that we have a three year old who does 3 days at pre school and a class at Little Gym once a week, I think we have had a pretty healthy year.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
The house. And the new HD TV. We finally entered the new century! And potentially my iPhone. But I don’t have it yet. So it probably doesn’t count.
12. Where did most of your money go?
By far most of our cash went to the downpayment on the house. And after that, it would be mortgages, preschool/daycare, and improvements to the house and condo. After that it would be travel. And then the 1,000 of things that suck your money away in every day suburban life. Its amazing how quickly it goes.
13. What did you get really excited about?
The house. Going on vacation. Having the condo rented. Christmas in the new house. Are you seeing the themes of the year yet?
14. What song will always remind you of 2011?
I don’t really know. I suppose, sadly, it would be the ‘Pirate Rock’ classic - Roll Up the Map. We have listened to the Jake and Neverland Pirates way too much this year. I suspect that is not going to change for early 2012 either.
15. Compared to this time last year, are you:?
– happier or sadder? happier I think. But I don’t really remember my state of being from last New Year’s
– thinner or fatter? Probably a tiny bit fatter, but I still fit in all my clothes, so it can’t be THAT bad.
– richer or poorer? Our cash has greatly diminished. But think of all that equity we have! But generally, I would say we have less money than we started with. I wouldn’t say poorer.
16. What do you wish you’d done more of??
Had more fun. I need to find a way to enjoy the early month of the year more. The short days, cold temps, and all the snow really make me miserable. I need to work on that.
And blogged more. Because its really the only record I have of certain things, and its fun to look back on a few years later, even if no one else gives a rats butt.
And taken more pictures. I need to take more pictures of the mundane parts of life. Because I know someday I will miss that the most.
17. What do you wish you’d done less of??
Honestly, I could use a Facebook intervention. And possibly a Pinterest one too. I need to get off the computer and interact with real live people more.
18. How did you spend Christmas?
In our house! In our pajamas. With my parents and brother. It was lovely. Even if I was sick.
19. What was your favorite TV program?
Friday Night Lights! So sad to see it go. And well, Hawaii 5-0. I can’t hide my ridiculous affection for that show. Its a little embarrassing.
20. What were your favorite books of the year?
The Hunger Games, which I started off the year reading. I flew through all three of them. I did read a TON of books this year thanks to my Nook. That was definitely the best thing I bought in 2010.
21. What was your favorite music from this year??
I don’t think I had any favorites this year. I think I need to spend more time listening to the radio and less time listening to Disney Junior music.
22. What were your favorite films of the year?
We see embarrassingly few movies. But I did enjoy HP7 Part 2. I am so looking forward to the first Hunger Games movie. Now that I am thinking of it, I haven’t seen a movie that wasn’t based on a book / isn’t done by Pixar, in um, YEARS. Perhaps I should work on that too.
23. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 32 (!?!?) on Monday. I spent most of the day with my family, and had my traditional (not by my choice) chinese food dinner and chocolate cake with presents.
24. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
More family time, I think. The husband’s work schedule is often INSANE we are are squeezing time in small windows. I hope this year he finds the balance he says he will every year. In March. Because there is no hope for that before then.
25. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Um…..I am not cool enough to have a ‘concept’.
26. What kept you sane?
Starbucks dates. And the gym, when I was going. Which is another reason that I need to get back there. Or we need to buy a treadmill. Which we are talking about.
27. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011?
I will never be a perfect parent. Or a perfect wife. And nothing is ever really going to be enough. But enjoying the ride is the most important part. And SOMEONE around here needs to remember that. *cough, cough*
